About the PKD Foundation of Canada (PKDFOC)
Our Mission: Promote programs of research, advocacy, education, support and awareness in order to discover treatments and a cure for Polycystic Kidney Disease and improve the lives of all it affects.
Our Vision: “No one suffers the full effects of PKD.”
The PKD Foundation of Canada
The PKD Foundation of Canada had its humble beginnings in a living room of a private home in Oakville, Ontario in 1993, and has continued growing since then, to where we are today – at a juncture where treatments for PKD are truly and finally within reach. This progress made has been so great, that patients with PKD and their families have been given new hope for the future.
From our first $30,000 research grant awarded in 1999, the PKD Foundation of Canada has granted a total of $162,000 in 10 years and has budgeted grants for 2010 / 2011 of $65,000.
And that’s not all. With the support of so many, the PKD Foundation of Canada has:
- Begun setting up Chapters and support groups across the country, to allow those afflicted with PKD, their friends and family to stay connected in the PKD Community on a local and national level.
- Built an expansive and passionate volunteer network around our Chapters.
- Joined PKD groups around the world to create our signature fundraising event – The Walk for PKD; raising awareness and funds for critical Canadian research into Polycystic Kidney Disease.
Today, the PKD Foundation of Canada is the only national organization solely dedicated to fighting PKD through research, education, advocacy, support and awareness. Our goal is simple – to discover and deliver treatments and a cure for PKD.
You can join our fight! You can help make a difference in the lives of 12.5 million people with PKD!

Executive Leadership
From four people in a living room, flash forward to the present and find the PKD Foundation of Canada with a database of over 2000 PKD patients and a core of almost 50 volunteers. Add to this solid group, our one dedicated staff member, Executive Director Jeff Robertson in our Toronto ON headquarters, and this is what drives our organization to be the voice for the thousands of people affected by Polycystic Kidney Disease in Canada.
Board of Directors
Our voluntary Board of Directors is made up of three members:
A Chairperson / Secretary / Treasurer
A Board member’s term is three years and they are appointed or elected annually at the Annual General Meeting. The Board meets every other month and participates ongoing in support group meetings and various other events throughout the year.
Scientific Advisory Committee
We are privileged to have the support of PKD Foundation – USA’s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), made up of 12 of the most prestigious physicians and scientists in North America. The SAC oversees PKD Foundation – USA research and medical programs aimed at discovering and delivering treatments for PKD. They meet several times throughout the year to discuss relevant medical issues, provide guidance to the PKD Foundation – USA staff, and review and approve research applications for grants and fellowships in the field of PKD science.
Financial Information
Since our inception in 1993, the PKD Foundation of Canada has raised thousands of dollars towards finding a treatment and cure for PKD. The money entrusted to our Foundation and the prudent management of these funds is paramount to the continuance of the PKD Foundation of Canada and our programs.
Partners
We are extremely grateful for the commitment that several organizations have made to the PKD Foundation of Canada. Thanks to our corporate partners, we are able to make strides in achieving our mission to fight PKD through education, awareness, advocacy and research.
