March is National Kidney Month!

Your donation directly impacts the lives of 66,000 Canadians and 12.5 million people worldwide affected by this disease.

Voices of PKD: Anthony Chandler, Toronto ON

"I found out that I have ADPKD just before my 45th birthday. I had just won a silver medal at the UEAJJF Canada National Pro Brazilian Jiujitsu Championship, and felt like my soul had been sucked away after throwing my opponent to the ground and landing on his hipbone with my kidney area. I won the match, but felt strange and weak during my final match. Two days later, I was in an emergency room unable to sit or stand from the pain. Twelve hours later (six of which were spent alone waiting for a blood clot to pass through my urethra), I found out that I had multiple cysts on both of my kidneys and liver. It was 5am and the ER Doctor was not exactly delicate with the news."

Naming the PKD Foundation of Canada in your Will is a wonderful way to continue your support after your lifetime. Bequests help ensure the continuation of research programs, education, awareness and support for Canadians affected by polycystic kidney disease.

The significant advantage of a planned gift or future gift is that it often gives you, the donor, the opportunity to make larger, more lasting gifts than might otherwise be possible if made from your available cash. For example: if you are a pensioner living off a fixed income, you may not be able to afford a gift today; however, you may be able to make a substantial donation through a gift from your estate.

From a personal perspective, a planned gift is a tangible expression of the values you have embraced throughout your life. People think that leaving money to a charity will diminish what they can leave to their family. Because of Canada's tax regulations, you can give money to a charity in your will that you would otherwise give to the Canada Revenue Agency in taxes. The charitable tax receipt issued to your estate may help offset taxes applied to the estate.

To find out more about leaving a planned gift in your will, contact Jeff Robertson at [email protected].

Growing Evidence: Water as a Potential Treatment for PKD

"People with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) could benefit from a moderate increase in water intake, according to new research.

A study from The Westmead Institute for Medical Research found that a moderate increase in water intake in rats with PKD led to a long-term reduction in kidney cyst growth and fibrosis.

These latest findings add to the growing body of evidence that supports water as a safe and effective treatment for PKD."

Higher Fruit and Vegetable Consumption Linked to Lower Risk of Early Death for Dialysis Patients

A new study found that higher consumption of fruits and vegetables may be associated with a lower risk of premature death in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.

"These findings suggest that well-meaning guidance to limit fruit and vegetable intake to prevent higher dietary potassium load may deprive hemodialysis patients of the potential benefits of these foods; however, intervention trials of fruit and vegetable intake are needed to support dietary recommendations for hemodialysis patients." said Prof. Wong.

Benefits, Barriers and Desired Outcomes with Exercise in Patients with End Stage Kidney Disease

Patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) are generally sedentary and have a poor quality of life.

Several factors are responsible for the poor quality of life in patients on dialysis, including high burden of comorbid disease and dialysis-related side effects. In other chronic disease populations, increasing physical activity through exercise has been reported to improve quality of life, improve physical function, and reduce hospitalization.

The Clinical Journal of American Society of Nephrology recently conducted a study surveying 423 dialysis patients to assess the perceived benefits and barriers to exercise and to discover preferred outcomes.
