We hope you can join us on Wednesday February 15th at 7pm EST for our webinar, “Medical Cannabis in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.” We will be hearing from Dr. Micheli Bevilacqua, a nephrologist, Dr. Dan Martinusen and Dr. Claudia Ho, pharmacists, and Paul Watson, a PKD patient. Topics that will be discussed include:

  • An overview of the current state of evidence regarding use of cannabis in people living with kidney disease
  • Practical considerations for those using or considering using cannabis
  • How cannabis use integrates into overall care of people living with kidney disease
  • Discussion of lived experience using cannabis as part of management of polycystic kidney disease symptoms

About the Speakers

Dr. Micheli (Mike) Bevilacqua is a nephrologist based in Surrey, British Columbia. He is the chair of the Kidney Care Committee, which oversees the care of over 15,000 British Columbians living with chronic kidney disease and is also the Medical Lead for the BC Polycystic Kidney Disease Network which aims to optimize management of PKD in BC. 

Dr. Dan Martinusen, Provincial Director at BC Renal,  graduated from UBC then completed a residency at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver and earned his PharmD from University of Washington. He became involved with the renal program at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria and has chaired the Pharmacy & Formulary Committee with BC Renal since 2001. His main interests are improving outcomes for same or reduced costs at the patient and population level.

Dr. Claudia Ho, BSc. (Pharm), ACPR, PharmD, has been a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Nephrology at Fraser Health since 2015, providing direct patient care to peritoneal dialysis patients at Surrey Memorial and Royal Columbian Hospital. She completed her B.Sc. (Pharm) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Hospital Residency in B.C. Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services. She then graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of Toronto in 2019. Aside from developing dialysis-related medication policies, her current focus is leading a project to expand clinical pharmacy services in Fraser Health Kidney Care Centers. Academically, she lectures in undergraduate nephrology courses at UBC and is a co-investigator and study coordinator of the SAFE-D trial. She is also a member of the BC Renal Pharmacy and  Formulary Committee, and has contributed to drug reviews and the revision of several BCR guidelines. 

Paul Watson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author of three books. He has polycystic kidney disease.
