Eric's Kilimanjaro Training Regimen | Peaks for PKD
Eric is gearing up for an incredible adventure this October: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This journey is not just about reaching the summit but also about raising awareness and funds for polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Here's a closer look at how Eric is preparing for this monumental challenge, from his training regimen to dietary changes, all while managing PKD.
A Day in the Life: Eric's Training Regimen
Eric's weekly training routine is a balanced mix designed to build both strength and endurance. His schedule includes:
Short Runs (5km): Eric does 1-2 short runs each week. These runs are on courses with stairs and hills, which help strengthen his legs and build the stamina needed for the steep climbs of Kilimanjaro.
Long Runs (>10km): He also includes one longer run each week, focusing on building endurance. These runs help Eric prepare for the extended periods of physical exertion he'll face during the climb.
Hiking with Equipment: Whenever time allows, Eric goes on longer hikes using the gear he will take up the mountain. This practice helps him get used to the weight and feel of his equipment, ensuring he’s comfortable and prepared. Here's a picture from one of Eric's hikes.
As the weather in the UK (where Eric currently lives) starts to deteriorate, Eric plans to join a gym and a racquet club this fall. This will help him maintain his fitness levels and keep up with his training indoors when outdoor conditions aren’t favorable.
Insights Gained Along the Way
Throughout his training, Eric has picked up several valuable insights. He emphasizes the importance of consistency and gradually increasing the intensity of workouts to avoid injury. He also stresses the value of variety in training routines to target different muscle groups and prevent burnout. By incorporating both running and hiking, Eric ensures a well-rounded preparation that builds both cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength.
Managing PKD While Training
PKD is a hereditary condition that Eric has lived with for many years. Despite this, he has been fortunate not to experience significant impacts on his training. He attributes this to the gradual nature of the disease and his long-term management of the condition. However, there are a few specific ways PKD influences his preparation:
Dietary Adjustments: Eric is very mindful of his diet. He knows that one of the best things he can do for his kidney health is to eat well. Since deciding to take on this challenge, Eric has made conscious dietary changes, such as reducing alcohol consumption and focusing on a balanced, kidney-friendly diet. This includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and staying well-hydrated.
Monitoring Food and Drink Intake: Before training, Eric pays close attention to what he eats and drinks. This helps him manage his energy levels and prevent cramps during workouts. Proper nutrition and hydration are crucial for maintaining his overall health and performance.
Breathing Techniques: Managing breathing is another key aspect of Eric’s training. He practices breathing exercises to help avoid cramps and ensure his body gets the oxygen it needs during intense physical activity.
Staying Motivated and Focused
Eric’s journey is not just a personal challenge but a mission to raise awareness for PKD. This purpose keeps him motivated, even on tough training days. Knowing that his climb can make a difference in the lives of others with PKD gives him the extra push he needs to keep going.
The Importance of Support
Support from friends, family, and the PKD community has been invaluable to Eric. Their encouragement and shared stories of resilience provide him with the strength to keep training and stay focused on his goal. Eric also finds inspiration in the experiences of others who have taken on similar challenges for charity.
Looking Ahead
As Eric continues his preparation, the excitement and anticipation build. Each step he takes is not just towards the summit of Kilimanjaro but towards a future with greater awareness and support for those living with PKD. His journey is a testament to what can be achieved with determination, preparation, and a heart full of purpose.
Eric's story is an inspiring reminder that with the right mindset and support, incredible feats are possible. His climb to the top of Kilimanjaro this October will undoubtedly be a remarkable achievement, raising both awareness and funds for a cause that affects many lives. We wish Eric all the best on his journey and look forward to celebrating his success.
