Update from Eric: Staying Motivated, Keeping Perspective | Peaks for PKD

As October approaches, Eric Hampel is gearing up for one of the biggest challenges of his life: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This isn’t just any hike; it’s a monumental effort that requires intense physical and mental preparation. For Eric, this climb isn’t just about reaching the summit - it's about honouring those who inspire him, and raising awareness for polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Here's a look at how Eric is preparing for this incredible journey.

Nutrition, Training, and Recovery

Eric_03.pngOne of the key aspects of Eric's preparation is his commitment to taking care of his body. As someone who understands the importance of a balanced lifestyle, Eric is focusing on eating well and staying hydrated.

"The number one thing I'm doing to look after myself is eating well, drinking lots of water, and avoiding too much junk food and alcohol," Eric shares. By fueling his body with nutritious foods and cutting out unhealthy habits, he’s ensuring that he has the energy and stamina needed for the grueling 9-day hike up Kilimanjaro.

Eric’s training regimen is just as crucial. Each day starts with a walk to work, which racks up almost 10,000 steps before he even begins his additional training. This daily routine not only helps build his endurance, but also keeps him active and ready for the physical demands of the climb.

Eric_01.png"After a big run or hike, I will typically do some smaller runs or walks to cool down but not get complacent," he explains. This consistent approach helps him maintain his fitness without overexerting himself.

But like any rigorous training, Eric has faced his share of physical challenges, particularly with knee and back pain.

"I have experienced various pains while training, mostly in my knee and back," he admits. However, Eric isn't one to let setbacks hold him back. He has taken the time to research ways to prevent injury, and has incorporated rest into his routine to ensure his body recovers properly. This careful attention to his physical well-being is key to his ability to keep pushing forward, even when the going gets tough.

Preparing Mentally

Eric_06.pngClimbing Mount Kilimanjaro isn’t just a physical challenge; it’s a mental one as well. Eric knows that mental toughness will be crucial to making it to the top, and he's taking steps to prepare his mind just as rigorously as his body.

"The main mental preparation I'm doing is through reading and research, so I know what to expect," Eric says. By educating himself about the climb, he’s preparing for the potential challenges that lie ahead, from altitude sickness to the unpredictable weather conditions.

But knowledge alone isn't enough. Eric is also making sure that he’s mentally ready to endure the physical strain of the climb.

"I'm keeping up my training so that I know I have the stamina to endure the challenges of a nine-day hike, and camping," he explains. Training isn’t just about building strength; it’s about building confidence. Each step Eric takes now is a step closer to knowing he can handle whatever the mountain throws at him.

Eric’s preparation also includes spending time outdoors in less-than-ideal conditions. By camping and hiking in bad weather, he’s getting a taste of what it might be like on the mountain.

"I'm also spending time outdoors in bad weather and camping when I can, to get used to the conditions on the mountain," Eric notes. This hands-on experience is helping him build resilience and adaptability, traits that will be invaluable when he’s facing the elements on Kilimanjaro.

Overcoming Challenges

Eric_04.pngTraining for such a monumental endeavour isn’t without its setbacks. Whether it's dealing with physical pain, battling the elements, or simply facing the daily grind of preparation, Eric has had to overcome numerous obstacles. But he finds strength in remembering why he’s doing this climb in the first place.

"When I am dealing with challenges or setbacks, the best way I find to manage them is to think about who I'm supporting by doing this hike," he says.

Eric is motivated by the challenges that PKD patients face daily - challenges far greater than those he will encounter on the mountain.

"Patients who have gone through challenges like dialysis, transplant, kidney pain, etc. have it much worse than I will, even at the hardest point of the hike," Eric reflects. This perspective keeps him grounded and focused, knowing that every step he takes is in honour of those who battle this disease.

Eric_07.pngIn addition to supporting PKD patients, Eric is also climbing in honor of people who have made a significant impact on his life. One such hero is Sue Ward, who donated a kidney to Eric's mother.

"I'm also doing it to honour heroes like Sue Ward, who donated a kidney to my mother, and what she went through to give that gift," Eric shares. For him, this climb is more than a personal achievement - it’s a tribute to the generosity and courage of others.

Looking Ahead

With just a few months to go before he begins his ascent, Eric is in the final stages of preparation. His physical training continues, his mental toughness is building, and his motivation remains unwavering. Every day, he gets a little closer to his goal, fueled by the knowledge that this climb is about something much bigger than himself.

As Eric prepares for the adventure of a lifetime, he knows that the journey is just as important as the destination. The time he’s spent training, the lessons he’s learned, and the people who inspire him will all play a part in his success. When he stands at the summit of Kilimanjaro, it won’t just be the fulfillment of a personal dream - it will be a victory for everyone who has supported him along the way.

So as Eric continues his preparations, we wish him strength, endurance, and the best of luck. His climb is a reminder that with determination, resilience, and the right motivation, even the highest mountains can be conquered.
