Why Climb Kilimanjaro? | Peaks for PKD

Taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa tests both one's physical and mental limits. So, what inspires someone to do it?
For PKD patient Eric Hampel, it started ten years ago when he was working in Toronto, and a coworker came back from an amazing adventure: climbing Kilimanjaro. The coworker's exciting stories and beautiful photos left a lasting impression on Eric. From that moment, climbing Kilimanjaro was on Eric’s 'bucket list.'
Years went by, but Eric's dream of climbing Kilimanjaro never faded. Ten years later, he was still determined to take on this monumental challenge. Two things had changed in Eric's life that made it possible. First, he was in a better place with more stability, money, and flexibility at work, making it easier to commit to the nine-day climb. Second, Eric had been inspired by the PKD community. Reading about others taking on physical challenges for charity made him think, "Why not combine this incredible adventure with a cause I care about?"
Eric has known for many years that he has polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Through reading PKD newsletters and seeing the strength of others affected by the disease, Eric felt motivated to make a difference. He realized his climb could be more than a personal achievement; it could also raise awareness and funds for PKD research and patient supports. With this new purpose, his adventure meant even more.
Preparing for such a big challenge is no small feat. Eric’s journey to the summit started long before he planned to set foot on the mountain this coming October. It took careful planning, lots of research, and many conversations with people who had climbed Kilimanjaro. Eric talked to friends and acquaintances who shared their experiences and gave valuable advice. He also consulted with guiding companies to find the best fit for his needs.
Eric made sure he was well-prepared by diving into a detailed guidebook that covered everything about the climb. From physical training and acclimatization techniques to packing lists and motivation tips, the guidebook has became his go-to resource. Eric's dedication showed as he studied the book, soaking up every detail and getting mentally ready for the journey.
Besides the practical aspects, Eric spent countless hours on Google, researching everything from Kilimanjaro’s weather patterns to success stories of other climbers. He watched videos, read blogs, and combed online forums to gather as much information as possible. Each piece of knowledge boosted his confidence and readiness for the climb.
Eric's story shows how a dream, sparked by someone else's adventure, can grow and evolve. With determination, preparation, and a meaningful cause, he is turning his dream into a reality, proving that incredible things are possible when you set your mind to them.
